Shower Grab Bar Installation Done Right

Here's the uncomfortable truth about most grab bars: they were installed into drywall with plastic anchors, and they will fail the first time someone actually falls against them. The bar is the visible 10% of the job. The other 90% is behind the wall.

What blocking actually is

Blocking is solid lumber fastened between the wall studs, creating a continuous anchoring surface exactly where the bar mounts. A bar screwed through the wall surface into blocking holds hundreds of pounds of sudden, angled force — which is what a real fall delivers. Drywall anchors hold a towel.

Why timing is everything

Installing blocking requires an open wall. During a conversion or remodel — when the wet walls are already open — adding blocking costs almost nothing and takes minutes. After the walls are closed, it means cutting them open again. This is why we ask every homeowner, even the ones who feel young: do you want blocking for future bars? The answer should almost always be yes. You're not committing to bars; you're keeping the option cheap forever.

Placement is a craft, not a chart

  • A vertical bar at the entry, where you steady yourself stepping in
  • A horizontal or angled bar on the long wall for moving and turning
  • A bar within natural reach of the seat, for sitting down and standing up
  • Heights set to the actual user's reach — not a generic diagram

And yes — they can look good

Brushed nickel, matte black, brass; bars that double as towel racks and corner shelves. Nobody walks into our finished bathrooms and thinks 'hospital.' They think 'that's a nice shower' — which is exactly the point.

If your walls are already open for any project, add the blocking. If you need bars in existing walls, we locate studs and use proper structural fastening — honestly engineered, not hopefully anchored.

Next step: see how we handle accessibility & safety

Grab bars, low-threshold and barrier-free entries, built-in seating, handheld heads, and slip-resistant floors — safety that doesn't look like a hospital.
